Terms of Use
Last updated: 19 October 2026
These terms apply when you use Castiel. By using the app you accept them.
1. Who you are dealing with
Castiel is provided by Kevin Baur, a sole trader, Hochstraß 542, 3033 Klausen-Leopoldsdorf, Austria, reachable at castiel@kevin-baur.com. Full provider details are in the Imprint.
2. What Castiel is
Castiel accompanies you in prayer: with recordings of real church bells, a prayer timer, prayer alarms and reminders, a daily Bible verse and saint, reflections, and a community where people pray for one another. Some features are free, others are part of Castiel Pro (section 8).
Castiel supports your personal prayer. The app does not replace pastoral care or medical or psychological help. If you are in a crisis or thinking about suicide, please contact emergency services (112 in the EU, 911 in the US) or a local crisis line right away.
3. AI-generated texts
The choice of church and bell, the personal word on your prayer, reflections and reviews are created by an AI model, and for a prayer alarm it checks your prayer. Such texts can be inaccurate, unsuitable or wrong, including on Bible passages or questions of faith. They are suggestions, not church teaching and not professional advice. What AI features do with your texts is explained in the Privacy Policy.
4. Prayer alarms and reminders
Alarms and reminders are scheduled by your device's operating system. Silent mode, focus and power-saving modes, manufacturer settings (such as battery optimisation on Android), a flat battery or system updates can delay or prevent them. On iPhones before iOS 26, bell reminders arrive as notifications and are subject to silent mode and focus. If an alarm is set to stop only after a prayer, with Castiel Pro and Smart Companion the AI decides whether your text counts as a prayer, and it can be wrong. Otherwise, and without a connection, a simpler check on the device applies. So do not rely on Castiel alone when you must be woken reliably at an important time.
5. Account and age
Castiel is intended for people aged 16 and over. If you are under 18, purchases need the consent of a parent or guardian.
An account is optional. Keep your password and recovery code secret; you are responsible for what happens under your account. A display name or profile picture you choose must not impersonate anyone, be offensive or infringe anyone's rights.
6. Community rules
Accounts and praying for one another are free. Friendships must be confirmed by both sides. Please keep to the following:
- Send respectful content and only prayers the recipient wants to receive.
- No threats, harassment, hate speech or illegal content.
- Do not publish private information about others, including in prayer intentions, without their agreement.
- No advertising, no spam, no attempts to game invitation bonuses or to disrupt or probe the service or work around technical limits.
7. Reports and moderation
Reporting and blocking. In the app you can report a light you received and block people. Without the app, report illegal content by email to castiel@kevin-baur.com; please name the person or content concerned, why you consider it illegal, and your name and email address. If you report by email, you receive a confirmation of receipt and are told what I decided.
Who decides. Reports and measures are decided by me, a human. A report is a request for review and never leads to a measure by itself.
Possible measures. Content, a display name or a picture can be removed, and an account can be restricted, suspended or deleted. I choose the mildest measure that is sufficient. If a measure affects you, you are told in the app or by email what was decided and why.
Objecting. If you think a decision is wrong, write to castiel@kevin-baur.com and name the content concerned. I will review it again. You can also go to court at any time.
Point of contact. The single point of contact under the EU Digital Services Act, for authorities as well as users, is castiel@kevin-baur.com. You can write in German or English.
8. Castiel Pro
Castiel Pro is an optional purchase that unlocks additional features. Depending on your country, a weekly or yearly subscription and a one-time purchase are offered. Payment is handled by the Apple App Store or Google Play. The price, the term and whether a trial is offered are shown in the app before you buy, in your local currency.
Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each term unless you cancel at least 24 hours before it ends. You can only cancel in the subscription settings of your Apple or Google account, not in Castiel. Deleting the app or your account does not cancel a subscription. Refunds are handled by Apple or Google under their own rules.
One-time purchase. A one-time ("Lifetime") purchase gives you access for as long as Castiel is operated, not for your own lifetime. If I shut Castiel down, I will announce it in the app at least three months in advance. Existing Pro and Lifetime entitlements keep their previous features.
Feature changes. I may change the scope of Castiel Pro only for a valid reason: new technical or legal requirements, a marked rise in the cost of AI features, the security of the service, or preventing abuse. Such a change costs you nothing extra, and I announce it in the app at least 30 days in advance; for a subscription it applies from the next renewal at the earliest. If it makes your use more than slightly worse, you can end the contract free of charge within 30 days; your statutory claims arising from that remain.
Price changes apply only to future billing periods. Apple or Google tell you in advance about an increase for a running subscription, and you can cancel before it takes effect. A period you have paid for and a one-time purchase are never affected.
Inviting friends. Pro days you receive for an invitation are a voluntary bonus. They have no cash value, cannot be transferred, may be changed or ended, and are removed where they were obtained by abuse.
9. Your content
Your prayers, texts and pictures remain yours. For the community to work, I need permission to store and process them for that purpose and to show them to the people you intend them for. That permission ends when you delete the content or your account.
10. Availability and warranty
I do my best to keep Castiel working, but I cannot promise that it will be available without interruption or run on every device. Free features may change or be removed.
Your statutory warranty rights are not affected. The statutory warranty for digital services applies to Castiel Pro: if something promised is missing or does not work, you are entitled to have it fixed and, if that fails, to a price reduction or to ending the contract. Write to castiel@kevin-baur.com for this.
11. Liability
I am liable without limit for damage I cause intentionally or through gross negligence. The same applies to personal injury, whatever the degree of fault, and to liability under the Austrian Product Liability Act. I am not liable for other damage that I cause through slight negligence only.
12. Ending it
You can stop using Castiel at any time and delete your account in the app. I may suspend or remove an account that breaks these terms, particularly for illegal content or harassment, or where that is needed to protect the service or other users. How you are told and how you can object is set out in section 7.
13. Changes to these terms
The date at the top of this page shows the current version. I announce a change in the app at least 30 days before it takes effect and say what is changing. In that announcement I point out specifically that you can object, and that the new version applies to you if you have not objected by the time it takes effect. If you object, you can stop using Castiel free of charge; a period you have paid for then runs to its end under the old terms. I do not use this route to change the price or essential features of Castiel Pro; section 8 alone applies to that.
14. Applicable law
Austrian law applies, excluding the UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods. If you are a consumer, you keep the protection of the mandatory rules of the country where you live, and you can bring proceedings in the courts there.
15. Rights in Castiel
Castiel, its design, code, texts and artwork belong to me or are used with the permission of the rights holders. Bell recordings, images and Bible translations in the app are intended for use within Castiel only. Castiel is an independent app and is not affiliated with any of the churches, parishes or church institutions it shows.
For downloads from the Apple App Store, Apple's Standard License Agreement also applies; where the two conflict, these terms prevail to the extent Apple permits.
